Swetangi D. Bhaleeya, M.D.

Ophthalmologist, Medical and Surgical Retina Specialist

Dr. Swetangi D. Bhaleeya is a medical and surgical retina specialist dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of complex retinal diseases. She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, where she also completed her ophthalmology residency. Dr. Bhaleeya went on to complete fellowship training in uveitis at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and a retina fellowship in diseases and surgery of the retina at Weill Cornell Medical College/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. She is committed to helping patients preserve and restore their vision through advanced medical and surgical retina care.

Dr. Bhaleeya specializes in the medical and surgical management of retinal diseases, with particular expertise in diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, retinal tears and detachments, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, and other complex retinal disorders. She has a strong interest in clinical research and incorporating the latest advances in retinal imaging, intravitreal therapies, and microsurgical techniques into patient care.

Dr. Bhaleeya chose ophthalmology because it combines the precision of microsurgery with the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in patients’ lives. She was inspired by her grandmother’s experience with vision loss and by family stories about the history of vision-restoring surgery. These experiences fostered a deep appreciation for the importance of sight and ultimately led her to pursue a career helping patients preserve and regain their vision.

Among her proudest professional accomplishments are her years in academic ophthalmology, where she served as an educator, mentor, and clinical researcher. As an Associate Professor, Retina Fellowship Director, and Director of the Uveitis and Retina Service at the University of South Florida, she helped train future ophthalmologists and retina specialists while advancing the field through research and patient care.

Dr. Bhaleeya was drawn to Thomas Eye Group because of its philosophy of treating every patient like family. She values the practice’s commitment to compassionate care, clinical excellence, and collaboration, and looks forward to building meaningful relationships with both her patients and colleagues while delivering exceptional retina care.

Outside of work, Dr. Bhaleeya enjoys traveling, exploring new cultures, and spending time with family and friends. She also enjoys painting, which allows her to express her creativity and unwind from the demands of a busy medical career.
